4 Tips to Protect Your Pets from Tick Fever in Sydney

Tick Fever in Sydney

Ticks are a nuisance. They are unsightly parasites that feed on the blood of your pets. Aside from being difficult to remove, they could be infected with diseases that could pass on to your dog or cat.

Prevention is the best solution when it comes to ticks. Here are some tips to help protect your furry ones from them and the diseases they bring, like tick fever, for example.

Why Ticks Pose a Danger to Your Pets

Tick bites are very irritating and can make dogs very sick. Since ticks suck blood, a large infestation on an animal can cause anemia.

Much worse is the fact that infected ticks are serious disease carriers. Several varieties of ticks can cause serious illness in dogs, but it is the Australian paralysis tick or Ixodes holocyclus that can endanger the life of your pets.

How To Protect Your Pets

Ticks can cause skin irritations, allergic reactions, and severe illnesses like tick fever. Luckily, there are ways you can prevent your pets from picking up ticks.

Steer clear of high grass areas –

Ticks live close to the ground in plant debris or long grass. When taking pets for a walk from March to September (considered as tick season), avoid going for walks in areas with long grass, especially in areas where deer graze.

Protect yourself –

When going out for walks or are walking with your pet, it would be best to wear trousers and tuck the hems into your socks to cover your ankles. Avoid wearing open shoes or sandals. And always check your body and your clothes after each walk for ticks.

Regularly check your pet –

Whether your pet has gone out for a walk or not, it is a good idea to check your pet regularly. Start with the paws and then check the rest of the body. The instant you feel a little bump, part your pet’s fur and check to see if it is a tick.

Use tick repelling or paralysis tick treatment products –

There are many products specially formulated to kill, prevent, or repel ticks. Some are liquid shampoos, some are pills or sprays, and some are collars.

Remember that when it comes to using repellent and other paralysis tick treatment, seeking professional advice from your vet is very important.
